I, Quill Dragon, have supplemented his document with material from the version of Ultima I which was to be found on the Collection CD in the Dragon edition of Ultima IX - Ascension. I have chosen to correct Underworld Dragon's Transcript those few places where it is differs from the Collection version. I have done that, since I tend to think that the collection CD in the Dragon's edition of Ultima IX - Ascension will be the final official release of the ultima games ever... A moment later, thou art face to face with the evil Mondain himself! Good luck, this is it! THE FINAL BATTLE ...You hear a strange chanting ..it looks as if he is creating the evil gem! (All spells except Create, Destroy, Blink and Magic missile) Failed! (Casting Kill) "INTERFICIO-NUNC!" The spell doth seem to make him stronger! ((G)et the gem) The Gem is DESTROYED! Mondain's magical aura doth seem substantially diminished in the absence of the gem... ((S)teal) ...he's watching. That would be foolish! ((T)ransact) ...Mondain will not negotiate! The Magical Arts As mentioned elsewhere in this manuscript, the practice of magic had once died out in Sosaria. The power of the mystic tradition proved too corrupting for the general populace and the lords of the land decreed that all those dabbled in sorcery were to be banished. 'Twas not until the coming of Mondain the Wicked that our scholars once again unearthed the dusty tomes that contained the records of the once flourishing arcane arts, and set about to retrain adepts in the use of enchantments. Our leaders realize that once the discipline of magic is reawakened, it shall never again be put to rest. Such is our plight that even the most dreaded of the arts is laid bare to all who will try to learn it and who swear to use its powers to combat the spread of Mondain's vile influences. While those naturally born to the practice of sorcery, who can invent their own enchantments and forge new ground in the arts, have yet to emerge as powerful wizards in their own right, a certain progress has been made. There are four artifacts avail able to the budding mage which will enhance the ability to weave enchantments: Staff, Wand, Amulet, and Triangle. The latter is a magical sword that may also serve as a weapon. Several powerful spells, which will cost the buyer in both gold and experience, may be purchased in the magic shoppes of Sosaria. (Ultima I documentation) THE LATIN, a quick note by Quill Dragon As Mondain awoke the slumbering powers of magic he invested some of his minions with dark magical powers, which they wielded with terrible power... Yet those who opposed Mondain began the study of magic anew. Anew I say for the arcane arts had for long been abandoned. Thus the work towards the rediscovery of virtuous magic had begun. Many years should pass before the words of power were fully rediscovered and in the meantime other magic paths and words were used. Thus it came to be, that the earth tongue called Latin became a temporary vehicle in the desperate struggle to rediscover the lost arts and language of the arcane. NOTE: The letter "V" and the letter "U" were in Latin both written with the letter "U".
